In the past decade, conventional wisdom on social media changed dramatically, from being celebrated as prodemocratric platforms to being held responsible for the rise of polarization, fake news, and populism. In this talk, Sebastián Valenzuela will argue that both utopian and dystopian perspectives provide incomplete representations of the uses and effects of social media on citizenship.
