Galaxy Express 555 is the solo performance moniker of Minneapolis-based musician Christopher Farstad. His chimerical performance style evokes the soundtrack to alchemical weather rituals, technomantic spellcasting, or re-enactment of cyberwarfare—sculpting psychedelic juggernauts out of a shredded amalgamation of wind instruments, ambient synthesizer textures, and experimental percussion samples. By employing touch-based looping technology to develop, reinterpret, and destroy music in real-time, a Galaxy Express 555 performance is not so much freely improvised as it is de-composed. Farstad's latest album, Natural Mind, is out now on CD/digital through Sun Araw's Sun Ark imprint.
