This concert reunites a trio of jazz composers and improvisers for the first time in years. Brooklyn-based sax player Will Greene returns to his former Madison home base to revisit a collaboration with Milwaukee percussionist Devin Drobka and Minneapolis keyboardist Matt Blair (frequent co-conspirators in bands such as Yins and Collector, and on the recent Devin Drobka Trio album Resorts). The bill also includes a duo performance by cellist Ishmael Ali and drummer Adam Shead.
media release: Performing at Arts + Literature Laboratory on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at 7pm,
GREENE/DROBKA/BLAIR is a resurfacing of a collaborative effort begun almost a decade ago. In the intervening years, Milwaukee-based percussionist Devin Drobka and Minneapolis keyboardist Matt Blair have continued diverse and diligent work together in the collective bands YINS and COLLECTOR, and on Drobka's most recent release, RESORTS. Meanwhile, saxophonist Will Greene absconded to the East coast, partaking in numerous projects in the improvised and experimental music scenes of Brooklyn, NY, where he currently resides. Together, the trio explores shared interests ranging from minimalist electronica to forceful free jazz.
Also joining us is the duo of terrific Chicago musicians, Ishamael Ali and Adam Shead: Both artists with many hats who perform in many contexts, this performance will see Ishmael Ali and Adam Shead on their common armaments of cello and drum set, respectively, in addition to auxiliary instruments. This duo will focus on the interplay between rhythm and melody, and seek to challenge conventional expectations with non-traditional orchestrations and sinuous improvisations.
