media release: Folk-rock quintet, Honey Cellar, is performing their new album, Borders, at The Bur Oak in Madison, WI on Saturday, August 6 (tickets here). The group will be joined by local Madison artist Michael Darling.
Honey Cellar was born out of a border town, where fiddle tunes, folk punk, and Midsummer brought them together, thus serving as the inspiration for their new album. Borders shows both an instrumental and lyrical evolution as throughout the album, the group poses thought-provoking questions, but doesn’t necessarily seek to answer them. Instead, they intentionally leave space for their ruminations to be felt deeply and to be reflected on intentionally. Gliding seamlessly between evocative subject matters and weaving themes together with artful ease, Borders feels like a collage of the human experience. “In the last few years, we—as a band and as individuals—have gone through a multitude of life changes. We’ve faced heartbreak, death, illness, job changes and financial insecurity. We’ve started new relationships, ended old ones and some of us have gotten married. We’ve traveled and lived in other cities and countries. And through it all, we’ve been observing, reflecting and writing,” the band explains. Differing from their debut album, Borders finds folk-rock group Honey Cellar bordering new musical territories, staying true to their folky foundations, but infusing the music with subtle indie and pop elements, bringing a new dimension to their sound.
The Chicago-based group has played venues all around the midwest and their rich vocal harmony, vibrant instrumentals, and earnest lyrics make each show an intimate yet electrifying experience. The band could not be more excited to play in Wisconsin and says that “As Beloit College alums and all-around Midwestern natives, we're always glad to play in Madison. Coming here feels like coming home!"
The Bur Oak is an independently run event venue in the heart of the Atwood neighborhood. The 96-year-old building provides an intimate and homey experience with a current capacity of 130 people (more about the venue).
About Honey Cellar: Honey Cellar is a folk rock band based in Chicago, IL. Their debut album In Our Time was built around more traditional folk instrumentation and arrangement. Their second album, Borders, will be released in Summer of 2022 and is a natural evolution of their sound, leaning on folk-rock, folk-pop, and even indie-rock sensibilities. Their new sound brings the band to spacey new heights with the introduction of lead guitarist Shihadah and a more collaborative blend of songwriting. Each song is still shaped by their deep roots in folk music through the prominent featuring of violin, mandolin and flute.
