press release: The Wisconsin Union Theater welcomes Imani Winds  to Shannon Hall on Friday, February 1, 2019, at 7:30 pm. Pricing is as follows: UW-Madison students are $10, Youth is $20, Union Members and Non-UW Students are $25-$34, UW-Madison Faculty and Staff are $25-$36, General Public is $25-$38. The program, titled Old Made New, includes works by Jeff Scott, John Harbison, Lalo Schifrin, Gyorgi Ligeti, Reena Esmail and Valerie Coleman.

Grammy-nominated woodwind quintet Imani Winds has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world with their energetic playing, culturally poignant programming and adventurous collaborations. Starting as a quintet in the 2001 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Imani Winds was selected as the first-ever Educational Residency Ensemble.

Imani Winds links their traditional style with modern social issues. This has landed them opportunities to perform in major concert venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Kennedy Center, as well as various music festivals around the world. Additionally, they are on permanent display in the classical music section of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

They are committed to education and teach classes to thousands of students each year. In the summer of 2010 the ensemble launched the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival which highlights young performers and composers, bringing them together to learn about modern and traditional chamber music compositions. Festival participants have gone on to successes around the world, ranging from winning positions in orchestras to forming their own chamber music ensembles.
