The nonprofit JustDane (founded as Madison-area Urban Ministry) works for a more equitable society with a focus on providing services and programs for individuals in (or departing from) the criminal justice system, and their families. They celebrate five decades of advocacy with this event, which begins with a reception featuring music by the Michael Buerger Jazz Quartet; the program at 7 p.m. features guest speaker Father Gregory Boyle of Los Angeles reentry organization Homeboy Industries.
media release: JustDane is excited to be celebrating 50 years of advocacy work in the Dane County community. A celebration will be held on April 11, 6 – 8:30 pm, at Madison College Truax Campus- Mitby Theater featuring Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries as our keynote speaker. It will be an evening of inspiration.
Judge Everett Mitchell, Dane County Circuit Court judge and former associate director of JustDane (at the time Madison-area Urban Ministry) will be emceeing the event. JustDane will be presenting our Partners for Change Award to Blackhawk Church with appreciation for and in recognition of their strong commitment to purposeful community impact through the generosity of Advent Conspiracy Grants. Our Visionary Award will be presented to Jackie Austin in grateful recognition of her lifelong advocacy focused on equity and social justice and her innovation in cultivating awareness around these issues.
The event will begin at 6 pm with live jazz by Michael Buerger Jazz Quartet and hors d’oeuvres in Madison College’s Gateway, followed by the main program in the adjacent Mitby Theatre at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite at https://justdane50th.
JustDane is private, 501(c)3 non-profit social justice/social service agency founded in 1971 and formerly called Madison-area Urban Ministry. JustDane’s many programs offer support and hope for individuals returning to the Dane County community after incarceration by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from fully participating in our community.
Blackhawk Church is a multicultural, multigenerational community of people that love God and seeks the good of our city by partnering with JustDane and others so that all may flourish in our communities.
