More on Camela Widad: This most recent collection of songs, is the culmination of Camela’s relocation back to the driftless region after the passing of her father 2 years ago. It encapsulates the tenacity and fortitude she has to be an indie singer-songwriter, a single mom and keep pushing through at a time when it could have been easier to give up.
After being back in Wisconsin after years on the East Coast, this Americana Folk troubadour, a little bit saintly and a little bit rock and roll, has found a warm welcome for her unique voice and honest songwriting that inhabits the space between Americana, Folk and Rock, the rich underbelly of American culture that courses through her veins.
After a pandemic hiatus, “Today’s Gurl”, was co-produced by Camela Widad and Pete Donnelly of The Figgs. The five song EP is a collection of Camela Widad’s most vulnerable songwriting yet. “We were rednecks and train wrecks, just dreamers through and through” - My Hometown. A deep terrain follow up to her EP “All This Beauty” released in 2021 and her newest two releases since "Warriors of Love" that landed her on the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival/Grassy Hill stage as an Emerging Artist.
Camela and Pete met after sharing a show with The Figgs at Dawson Street Pub in Philly. Camela and Pete stayed in touch to hopefully one day make a record and after lock downs, shut downs, moves and Camela learning home recording skills, they finally got to produce this latest release. They worked on the album remotely, sending tracks back and forth from Camela’s home studio in Spring Green, WI and Pete’s studio, Katonah Sound, in Upstate New York. Mixed by Donnelly and mastered by another Wisconsin favorite, Justin Perkins of Mystery Room Mastering.
2022 has been quite a year for Widad. “All This Beauty” garnered her ‘Best Americana Artist’ Spot Award with the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame in 2022. She also has two songs in the upcoming indie film “Orphan Doll” to be released September 24th and produced by female film maker Healy Lange for which Widad won ‘Best Composer’ for her songs in the film, from the American Golden Picture International Film Festival.
‘Today’s Gurl’ releases Digitally on major platforms September 16th. Fans can also look forward to a premiere for the music video for the single off the record, “My Hometown” produced with award winning Wisconsin film maker Joshua Mallet including vintage 8mm footage of life in Wisconsin from Camela’s grandparent's collection from 1960’s through the 1980’s.
"Today's Gurl" will also be released on Vinyl and will included “All This Beauty” on Side B of the LP later this year.
She will be opening for The Last Revel at the Madison Student Union Terrace Friday September 23 7pm. http://www.CamelaWidad.com
