THE BEATLES – Let Me Take You Down: An Exploration of “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane”
Brandon Quarles, associate lecturer of classical saxophone
In February 1967, the Beatles released one of the most ambitious singles of their career with "Strawberry Fields Forever" / "Penny Lane". In this Badger Talk, Mead Witter School of Music lecturer Brandon Quarles walks us through the history and creation of these iconic recordings, showing us what makes them so revolutionary while illuminating the differences in the styles of their composers: John Lennon and Paul McCartney. After the presentation, Brandon will take any and all Beatles questions you may have.
Brandon Quarles is the associate lecturer of classical saxophone at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and he is the executive director and soprano saxophonist of ~Nois, a Chicago-based saxophone quartet that defies categorization by working at the junction of contemporary classical music and experimental improvisation.
Brandon is also active as a soloist, chamber musician, and improviser. He has performed with chamber groups such as Eighth Blackbird, Ensemble Dal Niente, and the Zafa Collective, and orchestras such as the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, and the Northwest Indiana Symphony. Since 2014, Brandon has given the world premiere of over 50 works for the saxophone and continues to bring new music to the world through his own improvisational practice.
In addition to performing on and teaching the saxophone, Brandon recently designed and taught an undergraduate course on the music and history of the Beatles at Northwestern University. Since his teenage years, Brandon has been making music in the pop/rock idiom as a performer on saxophone, vocals, guitars, and keyboards and as a songwriter/arranger.

In these uncertain times, many of us are in the same position: hunkered down, trying to get a handle on our new reality. Like organizations and businesses across the globe, we at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have made changes to keep our campus and community healthy and safe. While gifted UW researchers identify ways to understand and develop a vaccine for COVID-19, our campus experts are finding new, innovative ways to support and connect with Wisconsin residents.
We are pleased to offer Badger Talks LIVE…. a Facebook Live series intended to help you cope, stay engaged and thrive during these challenging times. Can't catch the live talks? Check out past talks here.
