Lizzie
Music Theatre of Madison
UW Memorial Union-Play Circle 800 Langdon St., Madison, Wisconsin 53706
Given that she notoriously gave her father and mother 40 and 41 whacks with an ax, respectively, Lizzie Borden’s story is one of the more metal tales in U.S. history. So it makes since that Lizzie — the musical based on her story — is in a similar vein. Boasting an almost entirely female cast and produced by Music Theatre of Madison, one of the city’s most edgy troupes, Lizzie draws in equal part from Stephen Sondheim and Bikini Kill. The result is a raucous, feminist punk musical about one of America’s most notorious murders and murderers. Through Aug. 26. Note: After the performance on Saturday, Aug. 19, catch MTM’s annual Miscast show where Madison performers sing songs from roles they should never ever play — this year’s edition is based on politics.
