Maraca & His Latin Jazz All Stars

Overture Center welcomes Maraca & His Latin Jazz All Stars to the Capitol Theater Stage on Friday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m.  Considered one of Cuba’s most influential and groundbreaking flutists and a mainstay of international Salsa and Latin Jazz, Downbeat called one of his latest release Reencuentros a “masterpiece,” giving it 5 stars and listing it among the best albums of the year.

The line-up for the band’s 2016 US tours is Grammy™-Nominated Orlando “Maraca” Valle (flute, bandleader), Steve Turre (trombone), Brian Lynch (trumpet), Robby Ameen (drums), Mario Canonge (piano), Felipe Cabrera (double bass) and Orlando Poleo (congas).

Coinciding with the concert is the 4th Annual Latino Art Fair, hosted by The Latino Chamber of Commerce of Dane County, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Latino artists will show and sell their artwork with international influences. The Latino Art Fair celebrates the rich heritage of Latino people. Attendees will be able to view unique pottery, paintings, jewelry, prints, photographs, wood carvings, blown glass, recycled media, textiles and carved fruit.

Leticia Castillo, winner of the 2015 Latino Art Fair, will also have an exhibit for her paintings in the Rotunda Lobby from September 16th to October 16th titled “Legends of Mexico City.” A reception of her exhibit coincides with the Latino Art Fair on October 7th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The artists’ creations are meant to inspire. “My paintings are a celebration of life and heritage. Artists Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Vincent Van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin are a big influence in my work,” said painter Magda Bowen. Photographer Rolando Cruz added, “My goal as an artist is for my work to open dialogues about social, cultural and environmental issues and to inspire people to find a personal connection in our differences.”

Admission to The Latino Art Fair and Leticia Castillo’s gallery and reception are free and open to the public.
