UW Nancy Nicholas Hall 1300 Linden Drive, Madison, Wisconsin 53706
press release: The lecture will be hosted in the Elizabeth Holloway Schar Hall on the 5th floor of the School of Human Ecology Building (1300 Linden Drive) on the UW-Madison campus.
Dr. Vanessa Chiari Gonçalves is a Criminal Law and Criminology professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and a Visiting Scholar at the University of California Berkeley in the Center for the Study of Law and Society. The lecture aims to discuss the reality of the Brazilian Criminal Justice System and how it reflects in the context of families. Dr. Chiari Gonçalves will explore current data on incarceration in Brazil, features of Brazilian correctional institutions, Brazilian Supreme Court Decisions, and how they reflect in family relations. This is a unique experience for students, faculty, staff, and community partners to think about similarities and differences between the United States and Brazil and learn about the experience of a country from Latin America.
The event is being co-sponsored by the UW Lectures Committee, Human Development and Family Studies Department, the Global Legal Studies Center, Human Rights Program, Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS), Sociology Department, and the Demeter Foundation. Light snacks will be provided.
