The Mata Ortiz Ceramics Phenomenon
Unrivaled, award-winning, contemporary art pottery and jewelry from Mata Ortiz is coming to Madison. MMoCA is hosting a Mara Ortiz trunk show featuring this exquisite pottery and jewelry made from pot shards. Visitors can see over 100 pieces of art, enjoy artist demonstrations, hear a lecture, and watch a film on the Mata Ortiz phenomenon.

Madison collector Terry Haller and Mexican culture expert Diana Acosta will discuss the amazing history and stunning ceramics of Mata Ortiz. This movement was started in 1975 by a farmer named Juan Quezada and today the majority of the community are potters.

The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz
In the 1970s, a movement to create pottery in the impoverished Mexican village of Mata Ortiz, began with one man, Juan Quezada, and his patron, Spencer MacCallum. Today, this fine craft is the primary livelihood of a majority of households in the village.
