Metastatic Breast Cancer Die-In
to
Capitol 2 E. Main St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
press release:
If 113 people were killed in an avalanche, a shooting or an earthquake, news outlets everywhere would cover it. So why is it that 113 women and men die each day from metastatic breast cancer and no one blinks an eye? It's a lack of awareness & research.
Eulogy to be read to honor those who have died or are living with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, as every day 113 people die of this disease in the United States. 113 people will lie down on the State Street side steps of the Wisconsin Capitol Building to represent the people who die every day of this disease.
There is no cure for this disease and the median survival from diagnosis with metastatic breast cancer is only 2-3 years. 40,000 die a year and this number has not changed meaningfully in the past 20 years. Metastatic breast cancer is actually on the rise among women under 40.
Two of the women organizers/speakers from last year, Heather McManamy and Maggie Younggren have since passed away from this disease. How many more young mothers will die in the next 12 months?
At 12:10 all those in attendance will access their phones and send an email to the National Cancer Institute requesting more funding for Stage IV research.
