MLK Outstanding Young Person Breakfast
media release: The Urban League MLK Breakfast will celebrate nearly 300 youth from 44 Dane County middle and high schools with Outstanding Young Person Awards. The event will also feature a presentation of the Betty Franklin Hammonds and George Anglin Memorial Scholarships as well as the recognition of the latest cohort of MMSD Mann Scholars. Awardees were nominated by their schools for a combination of outstanding academic performance, leadership, and service in their schools and in their communities. This marks the 41st Annual MLK Youth Recognition Breakfast and nearly 1,000 youth, family members, educators, and other community members are expected to attend.

The Outstanding Young Person Awards recognize Dane County middle and high school students who exemplify a commitment to academics and service to the school community and their home communities in the spirit of Dr. King. Honorees were nominated by their schools. This year, almost 300 youth from 44 Dane County middle and high schools will be honored.
Betty Franklin Hammonds Scholarship: Created to honor one of Madison’s most dynamic and visionary leaders, this scholarship was started following her passing in 1999 through a generous endowment from the Madison Community Foundation with subsequent gifts added by friends, family and other community members. The Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of graduating seniors seeking to further their education beyond high school, with special attention given to those who have faced particular economic and/or social obstacles on their journey to educational advancement.

George Anglin Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to 2 graduating seniors who have overcome obstacles to achieving their goal of pursuing a post-secondary program focused on technology, music, art, or another STEAM field. The scholarship was created by Jim Gallegos, a former ULGM board member to honor the life and legacy of his spouse – George Anglin – who passed away in 2020.

MMSD Mann Educational Opportunity Fund: The MMSD Mann Scholars Program will also honor its 2025 scholars at the breakfast. The program honors the late Bernard and Kathlyn Mann, long-time Madison residents whose strong belief in education helped ensure the graduation of their five children from Madison Memorial High School and later from universities. Congratulations 2025 Mann Scholars!
