media release: Country artist Nick Hickman has announced the release of his next single, “Lessons Learned,” off his upcoming album, which will be released later this year. Co-written by Jeff Glasscock and Hickman, this song captures the journey of growth and maturity from the point of view of someone who has been there.
“I wanted to write a song from the point of view of a kid realizing what their parents actually did for them. Growing up, we couldn’t stand when our parents corrected us or thought they were uncool or jerks for punishing us, not knowing it was for our own good. We think we know everything when we are young,” Nick Hickman shared. “Now that I am older, I see more of what it was all about. They went through it all long before I was born. And the wisdom they obtained by going through it first is what they passed down. They are wise because of the experiences.. and looking back, I am thankful for the lessons I learned through the lessons they learned.”
Co-writer Jeff Glasscock exclaimed, “Lessons Learned" is a song about the realization that your parents really do know best because of their life experience. Remember when your parents would say that you’ll understand when you’re older? Lessons learned encompassed that very statement. It’s hard to realize that your parents are just normal people who are trying to figure life out like yourself until you take a step back and reflect. Parents really do want you to learn from their mistakes, which is why they always try to lead you down the right path. I know I’m thankful now for the lessons learned!”
The lyrics reflect and contemplate parental wisdom and life lessons. They recognize how parents seem to instinctively understand and anticipate their children's needs and actions. The song acknowledges that youthful arrogance often fades with experience, revealing the value of learning from mistakes and the wisdom gained through life's trials.
“How does your momma know exactly what to say when your down
How does your daddy know to check the oil before you leave town
How do they know when you lie after the perfect alibi
How do they know when something aint right
Cause they’ve been there they’ve done that walked up hill there and back
They broke some hearts and had the favor returned
They stretched the truth and they got caught but in the end its what taught em
That all the wisdom earned comes from them lessons learned
We’d always say that we knew everything about everything
You couldn’t tell us nothing bout nothing cause aint a thing we aint seen
But you learn pretty quick in the end you don’t know it
It takes some falling down to admit…”
