PhotoMidwest’s Focus Weekend includes both master class workshops and a variety of gallery shows and talks that are free and open to the public. Especially worth catching is Friday evening’s reception at Overture Center (5-9 pm, Promenade Terrace) featuring juror Larry Fink speaking at 6 pm on the surprising, varied photos he selected for the Festival show in Galleries 1 and 2. Friday afternoon offers a choice between two separately ticketed events:
a two day Master Class in-depth portfolio review with Larry Fink, or
an afternoon workshop What's in the Attic? A look Inside the Wisconsin Historical Society's Visual Materials Archive with Andy Kraushaar.
There is also a reception for PhotoMidwest's Black and White interest group's show at the Lowell Center, 256 Shades of Grey. Copies of the exhibition's book will be available.
Friday evening centers on the Festival Juried Show at Overture Center with a gallery talk by juror Larry Fink.
Saturday is the second day of the Master Class, lectures and discussions by David Travis, Barbara Tannenbaum and Andy Kraushaar. The afternoon concludes with Individual Portfolio Reviews by Barbara Tannenbaum; additional reviewers will be added as needed.
Saturday evening features Harvey Wang's film, From Darkroom to Daylight, an exploration of the film-to-digital transition in photography by notable photographers such as Sally Mann.
Sunday begins with another talk by Barbara Tannenbaum, Bob Thall gives a Joseph Jachna Retrospective for the show installed at the Sundance movie theater in Hilldale Mall, and a Festival Wrap-Up.
