Black and white photography, the original format for the medium, has enjoyed a Renaissance in the age of color digital photography because of the range of artistic and expressive opportunities it provides the creative photographer.
In the absence of a color palette, the visual impact of black and white images relies solely on the scale of tones between pure white and absolute black - the 256 shades of gray - and the photographers skill at exploiting them to create compelling compositions that highlight textures, shapes, volume and form. Unlike color photography, black and white photography is all about variations in the intensity of light rather than the wavelength of the light.
This exhibit presents a series of images created by members of the Black and White Interest group at PhotoMidwest featuring images representing multiple genres of photography including, landscape, portraiture, architecture, reportage and abstract.
The participating photographers are: Richard Armstrong, Warren Buckles, Reece Donihi, John P.Gauder, Ken Halfmann, Larry Hands, John Hanrahan, Peter Hewson, Tom Klingele, Bill Lane, Tim Mulcahy, Trevor Passmore, Sharkey Plender, Christopher Priebe, David Scadlock, Jim Sterne, Don Sylvester, and James Thornberry.
