ONLINE: Piracy Before and Under COVID-19
press release: Editors Víctor Goldgel-
The practices of copying and reinvention often labelled as "piracy" reflect the rich social networks and forms of creativity, authorship, commerce, and consumption that characterize informal economies. Through research on contemporary scenarios in the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, and Argentina, the authors will reflect on their work on piracy (including video games, books, clothing, and film) and the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic might affect it. Focusing on the specificity of Latin American contexts, their research dialogues with a growing bibliography on globalization, informal markets, and piracy. Among the questions they will address: Are attitudes toward intellectual property and piracy changing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic? What is the role informal markets play in weakened economies? And how will future research on piracy be transformed?
