Protomartyr
with Fred Thomas, Melkbelly
Wednesday, Nov. 16, High Noon Saloon, 8 pm
Joe Casey may be more than a decade older than his bandmates, but that doesn’t stop the Protomartyr frontman from rocking with the best of them. His vocals are pure emotion — strained, impassioned and optimistic. His bandmates match him with a jagged blend of indie rock that makes them sound like a post-hardcore version of the National. They released The Agent Intellect, their third full-length, earlier this year. With Fred Thomas, Melkbelly.
True Endeavors & Majestic Live Present. $14 ($12 adv.; ages 18+). Doors 7 pm.
The 11th installment from the Adult Swim Singles Program comes from Detroit post punk outfit, Protomartyr. Premiered via Stereogum, the track titled "Born To Be Wine" is an indie rock gem featuring timeless riffs and sardonic lyrics from frontman Joe Casey. The band is also embarking on a summer tour starting today in Bozeman, Montana and continuing until mid-November (tour dates below). Check out the new track, share and download it for free.
"Born to Be Wine" by Protomartyr
Singer Joe Casey had this to say about their contribution:
"'Born To Be Wine' was written and recorded in two days in March of this year. It was recorded by Chris Koltay at his Hi Bias Studio in Detroit and features contributions from Zak Bratto and Jake Kmiecik-Percussion, John Olson and Wade Kergan-Sax, and Trevor Naud-Dulcimer. The title comes from mishearing a Frenchman talking about his favorite rock and roll songs, while the lyrical sentiment takes in louche, elder rockers confined to man caves and a list of fearsome things that were ruminated on during a particularly dire phone interview."
Following the release of his critically-lauded 2015 album All Are Saved, songwriter/producer Fred Thomas entered a period of enormous transition. He gave notice at the writing job that had offered stability for years, got married and moved to Canada, all between multiple tours that ran the spectrum from sold out opening slots to sleeping in the car after empty gigs. At the end of yet another tour he returned to Athens, Georgia to again work with producer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Mothers, many more) on an album aiming to encapsulate the nonstop changes that had sprung out of this phase of his life. Naturally, this record is named Changer.
