Arts + Literature Laboratory and Wisconsin Union Theater have put together another outstanding series of events for the Madison Jazz Festival. The big draw is this weekend at the fest’s traditional Memorial Union home, with music all day on the Terrace June 17-18; ticketed evening shows in Shannon Hall are by saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin & Phoenix (June 17) and 20 Feet From Stardom star Lisa Fischer joining Ranky Tanky (June 18). Still to come before the weekend is Rick Flowers with Amalgam X (6 p.m., June 14, Penn Park); a concert celebrating the release of Jamie Breiwick's second album revisiting the music of Don Cherry (7 p.m., June 15, ALL); and a visit by Chicago-based trumpet player Marques Carroll and his quintet (8 p.m., June 16, Cafe Coda). media release: The Madison Music Collective presents a Madison Jazz Festival concert in Penn Park by Madison’s Rick Flowers and Amalgam X, featuring Kevin Carnes on drums, Chris Moseley on guitar, Adam Czerepinski on bass, and Flowers on keyboards and vocals on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. This concert is part of the Collective’s popular DIG JAZZ concert series. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy live jazz in the park. You can also purchase food from the Sista’s Chicken & Fish food trunk. This event is free and open to all ages.
