Scott Mulvahill
Stoughton Opera House 381 E. Main St., Stoughton, Wisconsin 53589
press release: Upright bassist Scott Mulvahill impressed the audience at this year’s Catfish River Music Festival in Stoughton back in July. With only the bass and his voice, Mulvahill is able to transport listeners into the world of his original songs, transfixing them with the interplay of strings to vocal melodies.
Without setting out to become a musician, the Texas-born Mulvahill’s natural inclination toward the bass pressed him into motion early on. After attending North Texas State University, a move to Nashville enabled Mulvahill to pick up a gig playing with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, touring with them for more than five years. In that time Mulvahill discovered his nitch.
“I started music as a bass player, but when it came to singing and writing songs, all my favorite writers played guitar or piano, and I just figured I had to as well. But while in Ricky Skaggs’ band, I started performing '20/20 Vision' in the show, which opened with just the bass and my voice, and it was a revelation. I realized that this sound, this concept could work, and I honestly wondered why I hadn't had the courage to do it before.”
Mulvahill found the courage and struck out on his own. He has since received honors or been featured in a number of songwrighting contests and competitions. He has also shared the stage with artists Alison Krauss, Barry Gibb of the BeeGees, Bruce Hornsby, Brad Paisley, Peter Frampton, Steven Curtis Chapman, Emmylou Harris, Dave Barnes, Ben Rector, and many more. He’s currently touring in support of his September release, Himalayas, which was produced by himself, Charlie Peacock (The Civil Wars, The Lone Bellow) Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Sarah Jarosz), and Shani Ghandi (Sarah Jarosz).
