Shovels & Rope
with Matthew Logan Vasquez
Saturday, Oct. 8, Barrymore Theatre, 8 pm
The Bonnie and Clyde of American folk music, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent attack their live shows as if they’re robbing a bank. The South Carolinians trade back and forth on guitar and drums — and sing together with absolute abandon. Their latest release, Little Seeds, is a highly personal project, with tracks about Hearst’s pregnancy, Trent’s father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, and the death of a close friend. With Matthew Logan Vasquez.

press release: Critically acclaimed husband & wife duo Shovels & Rope will perform at Barrymore Theatre on October 8 in support of their anticipated new album Little Seeds, which is releasing October 7 via New West Records. Known for their honest, raw and highly distinctive sound, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent (aka Shovels & Rope) have made their most personal and powerful album yet. As songwriters, Hearst and Trent have earned a reputation as gifted storytellers through their music, but Little Seeds is different from prior work in that the stories here are true and inspired by personal experiences and observations. "I Know" by Shovels & Rope
Shovels & Rope’s penchant for writing literate, Southern Gothic infused songs that exude a dark humor, deep sentiment and the celebration of the genuine, quirky and beautiful things in life has never shined brighter than it does on Little Seeds. The new album reflects a pivotol and tumultuous time in their lives, and in our society. Like most of their previous material, Little Seeds was recorded in the couple’s Charleston, South Carolina, home studio, and produced by Trent. Hearst and Trent wrote all the songs and played every instrument.
