#ShutDownChase National Action Day
Capitol 2 E. Main St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
press release: On April 10, concerned citizens and Chase Bank customers will gather together for a non-violent protest of Chase Bank’s heavy involvement in tar sands extraction and distribution via pipelines. The protest is a part of a coordinated international movement that has prompted major divestment from the fossil fuels industry. JPMorgan Chase is the largest Wall Street funder of tar sands, with over $3 billion invested in the past 3 years. The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report makes it clear that we only have a little more than a decade to halve emissions in order to limit the Earth's temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This means banks must end their support for fossil fuels and cease financing further expansion of any fossil fuels.
WHEN: Wednesday, April 10, 4:45-5:45pm; beginning at the on the State Street side of the Capitol, then marching over to the downtown Madison Chase Bank branch at 22 E Mifflin St.
The rally is being organized by 350 Madison’s Divestment Team in coordination with the Rainforest Action Network, and is part of a growing international trend of activists confronting Chase for its destructive financing decisions.
350 Madison’s call for divestment is situated within a larger shift towards renewable energy and ethical consumption in line with Dane County’s 2013 divestment resolution. 350 Madison has also been a part of the lawsuit between Dane County Enbridge over insurance regulations and Enbridge’s attempts to expand their tar sand pipeline, Line 61. As climate change’s impacts worsen and threaten Wisconsin’s landscapes and people, more and more people are joining together to actualize Wisconsin’s potential for renewable and ethically sourced energy.
