STS9
Friday, Oct. 21, Orpheum Theater, 8 pm
The synth and percussive-driven soundscapes of the group formerly known as Sound Tribe Sector 9 are as hypnotic and funkadelic as ever. Given that its latest release, The Universe Inside, is inspired in part by the Golden Records NASA included in its ’70s-era Voyager spaceships to give alien cultures a taste of our music and culture, you might find your perfect space jam.
THE UNIVERSE INSIDE—the band’s first new full-length studio album in nearly seven years—will be released via their own 1320 Records Friday, September 2. The 13-track album is the band’s first featuring bassist Alana Rocklin and continues their stylistic exploration in the studio, which is notable on the album’s lead single “Get Loud.”
"Get Loud" by STS9
The members of STS9—Hunter Brown (guitar/sequences), Jeffree Lerner (percussion), David Phipps (keyboards/synths), Zach Velmer (drums) and Alana Rocklin (bass)—went through a lot over the course of making this record. In order to connect and express something more direct than they could with the music alone, the band chose to utilize more lyrics than they have on any of their previous efforts. It’s an album about human identity and the magical truth of who we are, where we’re going, and our place in the Universe. THE UNIVERSE INSIDE—which was written, recorded, produced and mixed by the band at their own 1320 Mission Control in Santa Cruz, California—comes on the cusp of STS9’s 20th anniversary (in 2017).
