A new effort this year is to ensure the Summer Frolic is accessible to everyone by providing free carnival ride tickets courtesy of a gift from the Werndli Charitable Fund. A $2,300 donation from the trust — established by two Belleville farmers who wanted to ensure everyone in south central Wisconsin can enjoy the same opportunities and resources — will cover the cost of five rides for two people in any household that qualifies. The Mount Horeb nonprofit Neighbors Helping Neighbors will coordinate distribution of the tickets, with support from Mount Horeb Area School District social workers, and case workers from Joining Forces for Families and Building Bridges.
“We have given away tens of thousands of dollars, all to good causes, but this one made me the happiest,” Pamela Lunder, an attorney who oversees the Werndli fund, recently told the Mount Horeb Mail. “Food, rent, basic needs are always the focus. So, where does the fun come in? Just because a family is struggling with money, does that mean they can’t go down to the Frolic and have some fun? You’ve got to have fun; otherwise, it’s just a drudge every day.”
In addition to the carnival, which is provided by Mr. Ed’s Magical Midways, the Summer Frolic offers a variety of fun events. There will be live local music in the beer tent on Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday; a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter fly-in and tours from 5-7 p.m. Friday; the Norsk Run at 8:30 a.m. Saturday; a bingo tent run by the Mount Horeb Lions Club; a “Frolic Fours” volleyball tournament on Saturday at Grundahl Park; a youth baseball tournament at Grundahl and Sunrise parks; fireworks at dusk on Saturday; and a raffle that includes nearly $19,000 in prizes. View the full schedule of events here.
The Frolic Parade on Sunday, June 11, will begin at noon at Mount Horeb High School. Participants will head west down Garfield Street, then south on First Street and west on Henry Street, ending on the Frolic grounds at Grundahl Park. This year’s parade marshals are Jeremy and Josh Kahl, two brothers and employees representing Miller & Sons Supermarket – Mount Horeb, which has been a loyal lead Frolic sponsor for many years.
“We’re looking forward to our community’s favorite weekend of the year – one that’s always known for creating memories and giving everyone the chance to celebrate Mount Horeb’s special small-town charm,” Summer Frolic President Amy Mertz said. “We have a fantastic team of volunteers that works really hard at every aspect of the festival so we can pour the profits back into our local parks and recreation resources.”
The Summer Frolic thanks its 2023 lead sponsors for their support: Gerber Leisure Products, Miller & Sons Supermarket – Mount Horeb, MHB Real Estate and Trail This Bicycle Shop.
