press release: The Sun Prairie Area Community Band (SPACB) is presenting a Fall Concert on Sunday, October 22, at 4:00 PM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie. The band is proud to announce they are under new direction of Doug Terhune. Mr. Terhune grew up in Hopewell, New Jersey and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education degree from Carroll College in Waukesha. He received his master’s degree in music education from VanderCook College in Chicago, Illinois. He was a band director in the Monona Grove School District for grades six through twelve from 1970 to 2004. He has played professionally with the Jimmy Hartwig and Dick Jurgens Orchestras, as well as other big bands and jazz combos. He has also (when the music calls for saxophone) played with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Beloit Janesville Symphony. He has been a clinician for the Ladies Must Swing Band and serves as a clinician for the WSMA (Wisconsin School Music Association). In retirement, he teaches saxophone and clarinet (classical and jazz) in his home studio to students ages middle school through adult. Volunteer groups include Retro Band ('40s style jazz) and the VFW Winter Band. During the summer he plays with the Capital City Band performing at Rennebohm Park, Madison. He is co-director of the Red Hot Dixie Jazz Band that performs parades and concerts in southern WI. Mr. Terhune is a substitute teacher for band directors in the Sun Prairie Music Department during the school year. Leisure time is spent playing tennis with his wife Karen and enjoying time with their grandchildren.
