Sun Prairie Stronger
press release: On July 10, 2018, seven years ago, the Sun Prairie community was rocked by a natural gas explosion in downtown Sun Prairie that tragically took the life of Fire Captain Cory Barr. The incident injured several others, forced many from their homes, and devastated numerous downtown businesses. In the wake of this tragedy, “Sun Prairie Strong” emerged as a powerful symbol of unity and resilience. It reflected the community’s deep commitment to supporting one another, caring for neighbors, and working together to build a better future in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“Sun Prairie Strong” quickly became more than just a motto. It embodied the spirit of Sun Prairie, the determination to rebuild, to remember, and to move forward. The city launched redevelopment efforts for the affected area, guided by community input and a desire to honor the city’s heritage.
Above all, these efforts showcased the strength of its residents and the dedication of the city’s Public Safety team.
“Following the incident, we made a promise: we would never forget. That promise holds true to this day,” remarked Fire & EMS Chief Chris Garrison. “We continue to honor the memory of Captain Cory Barr, the recovery of Lieutenant Ryan Welch, and the courage shown by so many on that day.”
On July 10, 2025, at 7:05 p.m., the department will gather at the statue dedicated to Captain Barr at 135 N. Bristol Street for a moment of prayer and remembrance. This will be a brief, unscripted memorial, and all are welcome to join in honoring the lives affected by that day. Attendees are invited to bring a flower or card as a tribute.
In addition, the department is encouraging residents and business owners to take part in their “Light the Night” initiative by lighting their homes or buildings in red on the evening of July 10 to remember Captain Barr and the spirit of Sun Prairie Strong.
