Madison nonprofit Project 1808 works to build community in Sierra Leone through tutoring, mentoring and scholarships for students. This new concert series is part of a fundraising initiative for a university at Kabala, and the first concert, featuring the Malian blues of Tani Diakite, takes place at Union South.

press release: Thursday, Sept 8., The first Pan African Music Session will take place at Picnic Point, Fire Circle 6 starting at 5:30pm. Join Malian musician Tani Diakite and Project 1808 at the fire circle at the end of picnic point for a night of music and traditional West African food.
This is the first in a series of concerts to be planned by Project 1808 throughout the fall and winter. Admission to all events will be free, but donations are welcome. All proceeds will go to Project 1808 to provide scholarships, tutoring, mentoring, and community programs in Kabala, Koinadugu Distrisct, Sierra Leone.
The series of small concerts to be held at various locations throughout Madison will feature music and musicians from Africa and the diaspora including the many genres born from African music, including music from Latin America and the Caribbean. “We hope these sessions will build a community of music lovers who can come together to enjoy the music while learning more about African music and culture” said Project 1808 founder Alhaji N’jai.
Project 1808 is a madison-based 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 2011. Proceeds from the concert will help the organization increase access to higher education in rural regions of Sierra Leone as they work to build a university in Kabala, located in one of the most isolated regions of the country. Project 1808 plans to provide college-level classes in addition to leadership and professional development workshops using a combination of in-person and online curriculum.
