press release: The long running Madison Halloween tribute show "Night of the Dead" returns to the Barrymore Theatre, paying homage to all things Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia! Presented by new upstart Artisan Music Productions, the tenth installment of the event will take place on Saturday, October 29, with Terrapin Flyer of Chicago, Evergreen Grass Band from Eau Claire, and local tribute artists Mission. Each band will put on a "musical costume," paying tribute to Jerry Garcia with sets dedicated to the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, and Old and in the Way.
Terrapin Flyer has grown from its roots in Chicago into one of the nation's premier Grateful Dead inspired touring acts. Tours with long time Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals have been a regular occurrence, as have shows with post-Grateful Dead guitarist Mark Karan (The Other Ones/Ratdog), Tom Constanten and Vince Welnick (former Grateful Dead keyboardists), John Kadlecik (Furthur/Dark Star Orchestra), and Dave Hebert (JGB). This powerhouse conglomerate of musicians has become a passion of pure comradery, along with a dedication to the original ideas of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead.
Evergreen Grass Band formed in 2008 over the course of many beer and whiskey fueled nights hosting the open mic at the Mousetrap Tavern in Eau Claire, WI. The four-piece - guitar, bass, banjo, and mandolin - has been playing their distinctive and aggressive blend of bluegrass, punk, rock n' roll, jam and country around the Midwest for seven years. At this year's Night of the Dead, the band will be playing tribute to one of their all-time favorites, the Jerry Garcia led bluegrass band Old and in the Way.
Local Madison musicians Mission took the stage in 2015 with one specific goal in mind... preserving the music of the Jerry Garcia Band. The Jerry Garcia Band was the long running side project of the Grateful Dead front man, Jerry Garcia. Beginning in 1975, JGB was a highly regarded rock, gospel, and soul group, featuring a some of the most talented musicians the San Francisco Bay area had to offer. Mission holds true to these same roots, pulling from a local cast of Madison all-stars.
The core fundamentals of the Night of the Dead tribute are the idea that the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia's music still has plenty of life in it, and that the music being so improvisational in nature can and should go to new places in each performance. This year's lineup will prove to be the best and brightest to date.
