An avant-garde artist whose work occupies a unique spot in the history of Italian cinema, Paolo Gioli and his cinema explore the limitations of the screen, of darkness, of the projector. This selection of Gioli’s short films, curated and presented by UW Madison Professor of Italian Patrick Rumble, offers examples of the filmmaker’s playfully deconstructive attitudes towards the medium and its technology. Among other titles, the lineup will include Commutazioni con Mutazione (1969), Anonimatografo (1972), Children (2008) and Natura Obscura (2013).
