press release: "The May 1969 'Battle of Miffland' & Its Legacy" Symposium – Sat May 4th 9:30am-5:30pm at the Madison Senior Center, 330 W. Mifflin St 2nd floor. This free symposium includes sessions on the lead-up to the famous student-police confrontation at the original Mifflin Street Block Party in 1969, the 3-day riot that followed, and its aftermath and legacies for Madison politics and policing, and observations on governmental repression and militarized police vs. social movements and protests in recent times. Speakers include Madison historian Stu Levitan, author of the recent book Madison in the Sixties; participants in the street fight with the police; former Madison Police Chief David Couper who served 1973-1992, now an Episcopal priest and progressive social activist; and John Peck of the Madison Infoshop Free Skool. Co-sponsored by the Gray Panthers of Madison, the Madison Infoshop Free Skool, the Peregrine Forum, and the Industrial Workers of the World Madison Branch. Free event. Parking available at the Mifflin Street/Overture Center parking ramp for a fee.
