The Smart Studios Story, L7: Pretend We're Dead
Barrymore Theatre 2090 Atwood Ave., Madison, Wisconsin 53704
Celebrate Madison’s role in the grunge revolution at this record release party/independent documentary film festival. American Noise: Vol. 2 features songs from non-local bands that recorded at Smart Studios (we’re looking at you, Crucifucks!) and is the second release in a limited-edition, vinyl-only series that began in 2016. Meanwhile, The Smart Studios Story, produced by local filmmaker Wendy Schneider, returns to the big screen, and L7: Pretend We’re Dead (pictured) hits Madison for the first time. Vintage videos of local bands will play during intermission. “It’s a slice of Madison history,” says Butch Vig, who owned Smart with fellow Garbage man Steve Marker.

January 26th will be a historic Saturday Movie Night with a collection of films at the Barrymore Theatre never before offered together on the big screen. This month’s one-time event will be the second theatrical opportunity to celebrate The Smart Studios Story showcasing the city’s indie rock history through the amazing music and creativity that emanated from the dilapidated brick building on Madison’s eastside for almost 30 years. Legendary producers Butch Vig and Steve Marker, founded the analog studio in 1983 and gave rise to early DIY recordings that created the “Smart Sound”.
The critically acclaimed film includes performances by and interviews with members of Killdozer, Tar Babies, Spooner, Garbage, Poopshovel, Cattle Prod, Appliances SFB, TAD, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, L7, Urge Overkill, Laughing Hyenas, Chainsaw Kittens, Cosmic Psychos, Crucifucks, Poster Children... it goes on and on.
The event also celebrates the release of the film’s second soundtrack compilation vinyl, AMERICAN NOISE: Volume TWO. This limited run is a broad collection of bands from outside the Midwest who came to Madison via independent record labels like Sub Pop, Touch and Go, and Alternative Tentacles. These post-Nevermind-era tracks helped introduce “indie” into mainstream channels and changed the course of college rock with the commercial era of grunge. The DVD release of the film in 2016 was coupled with the film’s first vinyl soundtrack compilation, AMERICAN NOISE: Volume ONE, featuring local independent bands of the earliest Smart Studios era who recorded at the original studio located in the Gisholt Building (now, Shop Bop). L7: Pretend We’re Dead will PREMIERE in MADISON at this event!
The film is a real time journey witnessing the rise, fall, and ultimate redemption of the fierce feminist pioneers of American grunge punk: L7. Their signature sound of a heavy, catchy, mixture of punk, metal, noise and pop helped define grunge without ever leaving politics or gender behind. Founded in Los Angeles in 1985 by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner, the band features Dee Plakas on drums, and at various times Jennifer Finch, Gail Greenwood, and Janis Tanaka on bass. In 1991, the band founded Rock for Choice, a pro-choice organization with the Feminist Majority Foundation producing
Both films were independently funded and directed by accomplished women.
Director/Producer Sarah Price (American Movie, The Yes Men, Ceasar’s Park) is behind L7: Pretend We’re Dead and Director Wendy Schneider who works in the Midwest as a media producer and musician at Coney Island Studios, directed The Smart Studios Story.
