December's Featured Photographers Land on the Isle of Man
Seven photographers landed on the Isle of Man, each looking to discover something of the island they knew little about. In so doing, each one also discovered something of themselves. What they found is represented by the photographs in this exhibit. From Douglas northward toward Ramsey, westward toward Peele, and southward toward Castletown, they set out to search. Traveling by automobile, electric train, bus, steam train, and on foot, they explored the Isle. Some embraced a vision in our photographs. Others simply let the island speak to their muse.
Photographer Elliott Erwitt said, "To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them." While we might not consider the Isle of Man an ordinary place, those who live there regularly see, and perhaps overlook, the sights photographed. Explorers see with fresh eyes with which to observe. Their time was spent in towns, in the countryside, and in the glens. Time to photograph people and wildlife. Still, a question remains: Was there really time enough?
