Art can influence and inspire. Explore your creativity and experience MMoCA after hours at Under the Influence.
Begin the evening with a brief gallery talk by artist Allison Welch as she discusses some of the artworks featured in StoryBook: Narrative in Contemporary Art. Then, on to the museum’s Education Workshop to enjoy selected food and beverage pairings from Fresco as you work on a project influenced by ideas of memory and material culture. Allison will demonstrate simple hand sewing techniques to create a small quilted bag. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a piece of cloth that has some sentimental value, but is no longer practical to keep in its current form. Allison has pulled her inspiration for this workshop from the tradition of memory and "crazy" quilting. In her own home, she sleeps under a quilt made by her grandmother during an energy crisis in the 1950s. The blanket is made from dresses Allison's mother and aunts wore as children, showing a combination of industry and nostalgia often found in traditional domestic craft.
$30 members, $40 non-members. Participation is limited to guests 21+. Doors open at 6:00. Program begins at 6:30.
