media release: The Wisconsin softball team (19-29, 8-14) lost its second game in a row against the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, falling 6-5 in seven innings. The Badgers gave up 15 hits in the loss, coming up short in their rally. The Terrapins took the lead in the top of the third inning, and were unable to come back, despite cutting the deficit to one by the end of the game.
How it Happened:
Tessa Magnanimo started the game for the Badgers, running into trouble during the first inning. Three singles in the inning, and two stolen bases allowed for a couple of Maryland runners to cross the plate. Magnanimo eventually turned a double play with Ava Kuszak to get out of the inning.
Wisconsin retaliated with three straight singles of their own in the bottom of the first. Fiona Girardot got the hits started, followed by Kuszak, and then Hilary Blomberg got the Badgers on the board with a single to right field that brought home a run. Emmy Wells hit a long fly ball to the warning track that scored another run, tying the game at 2-2.
The top of the third saw another two-spot for the Terrapins. Two players singled to lead off the inning, before Maryland hit their first extra-base hit of the series, an RBI double that gave the Terps the lead. Another runner then scored on a double steal of second and home, making it 4-2.
Magnanimo was chased out of the game in the fourth inning, after giving up a solo home run. She was replaced by Shelby Jacobson pitching in her fourth straight game. Jacobson allowed another run to score in the fifth due to an RBI single but put zeros on the board during the sixth and seventh innings.
Wisconsin scored their third run of the game with help from Maryland fielding. The Badgers first reached base on an error, before coming around to score on another error. Down 6-3 in the fifth inning, Ava Kuszak came up to the plate after a Girardot walk. Kuszak crushed a home run to center field, narrowing the Maryland lead to one.
Wisconsin's rally came up short however, as the Badgers collected just one hit in innings six and seven. The team ultimately dropped the second game of the series, 6-5.
Magnanimo took the loss, now at 10-14, going 4.0 innings, allowing ten hits and five earned runs. Jacobson worked 3.0 inning of relief, allowing five hits, and just one earned run.
The Badgers defense rebounded tremendously after giving up four errors the previous game. Danielle Lucey threw out a runner trying for a double, Emmy Wells threw out two would-be base-stealers, and Ava Kuszak helped turn three double plays. Wisconsin committed no errors in the game.
