media release: The Wisconsin softball team (12-19) lost their first home game of the season against Nebraska in a offense-heavy 11-7 loss. The teams combined for four home runs, with the Badgers outhitting the Huskers 12 to 10.
How It Happened:
All eighteen runs scored in the game came in bunches.
Nebraska struck first in the second inning. After giving up a leadoff single and walk, Gabi Salo worked into an 0-2 count before giving up a three-run home run.
The Badgers retaliated in a big way in the bottom frame, starting with Emmy Well's ninth home run of the season. Wisconsin collected three more hits in the inning, including an Ellie Hubbard RBI single, and an Ava Kuszak two-run double to give the Badgers a 4-3 lead.
The fourth inning saw more crooked numbers put on the board. Nebraska took the lead back, this time off Shelby Jacobson who took over pitching duties from Salo in the third. A couple of free passes led to back-to-back two-run singles, giving the Huskers a four-spot in the inning.
Not to be out-done, the Badgers started off the bottom of the inning with four straight hits. Kuszak collected her third RBI of the day with a single, followed by Fiona Girardot doing the same thing in the next at-bat, driving in two, and tying the game up at seven apiece.
Nebraska would take the lead and hold it to the end in the top of the fifth. The Huskers went on to hit three more home runs, one off Jacobson in the fifth, and then back-to-back jacks against Tessa Magnanimo in the seventh inning. Wisconsin was unable to find anymore offense, falling 11-7.
All three Wisconsin pitchers made appearances, with Jacobson (2-9) ending the day with a loss after giving up five earned in two innings. Salo ended the day as a starter pitching two innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits, while Magnanimo pitched the final three innings, giving up two earned.
This was the eighth loss for the Badgers in which they scored 5+ runs. The team went 12-31 overall and hit 5-11 with runners in scoring position.
