media release: The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s official Gallery Night may be cancelled, but it won’t stop the Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired from celebrating and displaying works from 14 Wisconsin artists who are blind or visually impaired. The artist range in age from an 8th grader to 80-year-olds.
On Friday, October 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the Council will host a virtual Gallery Night with artist talks from each of the artists. Ken Lonnquist, a local singer/songwriter who is visually impaired, will play live music during the event. To watch live, tune in to the Council’s YouTube channel.
"I have been an amateur artist all my life,” says Verona artist Duncan Hamilton. “I enjoy working with oil pastels because it gives me the ability to work on smaller projects I can see with my magnifier. I want anyone with vision loss who sees my art to know they can adapt and create; they do not need to give up.”
Artists participating in this year’s exhibit are: Duncan Hamilton, Verona – oil pastel paintings; Rosemarie Fortney, Milwaukee – alcohol inks on Dibond; Alison Fortney, Milwaukee – photography; Jeannie Nylander, La Crosse – ceramics; Julie Chumas, Eau Claire – paint; Caden Drier, Fall Creek – smashed glass; Isabel Kinerk, Fontana – animation; Eli Santin, Madison – animation; Jill Smith, Appleton – charcoal on paper; Ellen Connor, Oregon – photography; Deb Clair, Madison – acrylic; and Donna Miller, Madison – paint. Many have had to change their media or process to adapt to changing vision.
"In the past, I painted what I saw,” says Eau Claire artist Julie Chumas. “Since I have lost my vision and learned a new way to paint, what shows up on the canvas is my heart and what I am feeling.”
