2024 Garden Tour Locations and Descriptions
1. 501 Toepfer Ave. Eugenia Beecher: “The front and South yard is a perennial garden with some herbs, potted annuals, and garden art. The terrace has been planted with native plants and grasses. The Meyer side garden is a rain garden and the beginning of a meadow. Also on the Meyer side is our patio, waterfall, gazebo a miniature Hosta garden and vegetable garden.”
2. 3909 Meyer Ave. Alex and Allison Pfaff Harris: “Come around back to explore our backyard, with berry patch, greenhouse, rain garden, veggie garden, and our newest project-in-progress, a cut flower garden with pizza oven. The berry patch includes blueberries, raspberries, a black bush and new this year, strawberries in a squirrel-proof box. The 2024 goal for the veggie garden is succession planting - peas, spinach, lettuce, and kale went in the ground in March/April, and will be replaced by corn and beans for the summer. The rain garden helps to divert the rain water that floods Meyer Avenue with most any rainstorm. The cut flower garden will grow with the seasons. Unfenced to critters, this year's garden is a test to determine what our backyard bunnies like and dislike to eat. Notes so far - bunnies like sunflowers and cone flowers, and the occasional daisy. They avoid eating dahlias and marigolds.”
3. 4113 Meyer Ave. Sam Smith and Randy Wallar: “Our backyard has a semi-formal design with a box-hedged rectangle of grass, bordered by a gravel path as the center of the lower level. A variety of shrubs and trees are are arranged around this--not a lot of flowering plants. On the upper level we have a small pond with shibunkins who live in it year-round, and a seating area where we spend a lot of time in the warm months.”
4. 449 Toepfer Ave Irene and Don Golembiewski: “Varied yard – native plants, rain garden, rain barrels, vegetables, mostly sun”
5. 4317 S Owen Dr. Victoria Goodman-Strenski: “Stepping into our yard, you will first notice our pine tree that has been bonsaied over the years. We have affectionately dubbed it “tree bush”. As you make your way down our riverbed, which has been remediated to control water, you will notice our miniature prairie on the left side while viewing our iris bed and clematis on the right side. The riverbed gives way to our backyard which we call our “farmette”. Enjoy looking at our lavender garden as well as the Mexican cilantro, oregano, and herb garden. You will also notice our blueberry patch, which happens to be situated in our diverse vegetable garden. And in the southwest corner of the backyard, you will see our working compost and our woodland plants. We love gardening and creating our miniature farm, we look forward to seeing you.”
6. 4022 St. Clair St. Maria Dahman: “An eclectic mix of flowers, veggies, frivolity and utilitarianism. It's a small yard that we
do our best to maximize. We love being outside.”
