Be the ancestor you wish you had! Learn to create lively, richly detailed stories for future generations to enjoy. In this workshop for beginning writers we explore how to write and share stories that reveal your family's formative experiences, values, and life lessons. We will spend five sessions discussing how to find the stories worth telling; how to convey the essence of people, places and events; how to deal ethically with the dilemmas of writing true stories about real people; and finally, how to share your work with others! For each class meeting, students write a few pages. Each class meeting includes time to share writing in a supportive environment. To enhance small-group interaction, enrollment is limited to 15. Anyone age 14 to 114 is welcome to participate. Attendees should bring paper and pen/pencils for in-class exercises. The single most important thing you can do for your family may be the simplest of all: tell your story! What past participants are saying: “I loved the tips, presenting my writing, and listening to others’ stories.” “It got me started capturing the stories that have been running through my memories.” “Sarah gave me ideas to try when I get serious about writing family history.” “My daughter has loved reading the stories I wrote in this workshop.” About the presenter: Personal historian Sarah White has taught reminiscence and family history writing workshops in the Madison area and online since 2004.
