Let's Eat Out Madison
The "Let's Eat Out" food cart gathering is expanding.
"Let's Eat Out Atwood," last fall's ad hoc ongoing Wednesday-night gathering of food carts just off Atwood Avenue at the BP gas station, will be back March 13, just after daylight savings time kicks in, says Slide food cart owner Christine Ameigh. The name is also changing to "Let's Eat Out Madison," since plans are to expand to Tuesday nights on Midvale Boulevard, starting March 12 -- "barring any really bad weather," says Ameigh. "We'll be out at Atwood regardless, though."
Ameigh got the idea for "Let's Eat Out" almost by accident. She parks her cart off Atwood and often encountered neighborhood residents walking past who asked if she was vending dinner there. Ameigh asked some of the other new cart vendors if they'd be interested in joining her to do just that. The spot near the BP station was chosen since there's room for 4-5 carts to park in the street without being directly in front of any houses. (Cart vending from a parking lot is against zoning unless the parking lot belongs to a restaurant -- which obviously presents competition problems.)
Wanting to expand, Ameigh and Rocky So from the SoHo cart "drove around the west side for about three hours looking for a place that would work," Ameigh reports. The Midvale spot will be in front of Midvale Elementary between Odana and Mineral Point Road, where there is an extra lane for parking, from 4:30-7 p.m. Slide will be there, and SoHo Gourmet Cuisine, and probably In N Out Empanada and BJ's Kolaches. "If it's successful, there could be more," says Ameigh, depending on available parking.
