Sol's on the Square is slated for opening Friday, Sept. 20.
A new Korean restaurant is coming to 117 E. Mifflin St., a space formerly and briefly inhabited by Veritas Bistro and Lounge.
Sol's on the Square (though technically just off the square) is slated for opening Friday, Sept. 20, says manager Sol Yu. Her dad, Young Yu, will be the chef. The family has run a restaurant in Korea for 16-plus years, says Yu, but now she and her father have come to Madison to join her brother, a student at the UW-Madison.
Yu has spent the last couple of years in Chicago and longed to open a restaurant there, but after visiting her brother in Madison and being attracted to the "peaceful and beautiful" city, she turned her attention here. Plus, she says, friends noted the scarcity of Korean food in the Madison area.
Sol's will complete a revitalization of the 100 block of East Mifflin, following soon after the opening of Fox Heritage Tavern in the same block. Gotham Bagels is across the street and the Blue Marlin anchors the Hamilton triangle.
Yu says that Sol's will feature most of the familiar Korean dishes, including bulgogi, bibimbap, and noodle bowls. "My father he really has passion" for Korean food, says Yu. "He loves serving food."
Yu says the restaurant will be having a 20% off special for the week after the restaurant opens. Hours will be, at the start, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Mon.-Thurs. and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Fri.-Sat., though hours will likely expand after Sol's applies for and is granted its liquor license.
