Swedish Lutheran Gloria Dei Church
Swedish Lutheran Gloria Dei Church
402 E. Mifflin St.
This defunct church was built in 1922, designed by Madison architect Grover Lippert. Its style is Neo-Gothic Revival, faced with red brick and trimmed with stone. It features a square, stepped tower with brick buttresses. It was constructed for a Swedish congregation founded in 1902.
Besides its architecture, the building is notable for being home of St. Paul's African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1965 until its conversion to housing in 1997. The denomination grew out of the Free African Society, organized in Philadelphia in 1787 in response to discrimination and slavery. It is open to all races. The congregation continues at 4525 Diamond Dr.
