UP: Chad Vader. This short film about Darth Vader's younger brother, Chad, is chosen as best overall fan film by Star Wars director George Lucas. In the film, shot at the Willy Street Co-op, Chad works as the dayshift manager of a grocery store. The film was the first in a series shot by locals Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda; there are now eight episodes in all, available on DVD.
DOWN: UW Memorial Union. A major renovation of the student union is put on hold after the state Legislature's budget committee refuses to issue $126 million in bonds to finance the rehab. Students voted last October to raise fees to pay for the renovations and build a new Union South, but the Legislature must authorize the bonds. Republicans on the committee say they want to keep student fees low.
