UP: Construction workers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the Madison area added more than 2,000 construction jobs between June 2012 and June 2013. The increase accounts for nearly two of every five construction jobs added statewide. Also this week, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced Project Big Step, a program aimed at getting more people -- particularly minorities -- to work in construction.
DOWN: American TV & Appliance. The 60-year-old Madison-based TV and appliance retailer announces it is going out of business, closing 10 stores in three states and laying off 989 employees. Doug Reuhl, president and CEO, says in a news release: "While this is a sad moment, it is also a proud moment. It's a moment to be proud of our efforts and to be proud of what we have delivered to the community."
