UP: Domestic partners. Ald. Mike Verveer introduces a proposal to the Madison Common Council that would require any contractors doing business with the city to provide the same benefits to domestic partners that they provide to married couples. The measure would apply to contracts of $25,000 or more.
DOWN: Consumers. Gov. Scott Walker signed into law a bill that drastically limits attorney fees in civil lawsuits to no more than three times the amount of damages. The result is that people seeking to retrieve damages for small claims - such as security deposits - will be hard pressed to find legal representation because attorneys won't be able to cover their costs.
