UP: Isabel Jacobson. The eighth-grader from O'Keeffe Middle School ties for third at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Jacobson, 14, correctly spells myrmecologist and cannetille before succumbing to cyanophycean, a type of blue-green algae. Jacobson tied for 14th in last year's spelling bee.
DOWN: Vang Pao Elementary. The Madison school board will meet on June 18 to reconsider the new school's name, after the former Hmong general is arrested in California. Vang Pao, who fought for the U.S. during the Vietnam War, is accused of plotting to violently overthrow the communist government of Laos. A prosecutor calls it a "conspiracy to murder thousands and thousands of people." It's kind of hard to turn that into a conspiracy to educate thousands of kids.
