UP: Paul Ryan. The Republican U.S. representative from Janesville is tapped to be Mitt Romney's running mate in the 2012 presidential election. During the announcement from the deck of the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Va., Ryan tells the crowd: "America is more than just a place.... It's an idea. It's the only country founded on an idea."
DOWN: Joe Wineke. Wineke was once a major player in the state Democratic Party, having done stints in both the Assembly and Senate and chairing the party. But he continues to be foiled in his attempts to get back into the game. On Tuesday, he lost an Assembly primary to Rep. Sondy Pope-Roberts by about 300 votes.
