UP: UW-Madison College of Engineering. The Grainger Foundation announces a $25 million grant to the school to create the Grainger Institute of Engineering, which will allow it to hire 25 new faculty and work toward a more interdisciplinary teaching approach. "We'll be seeking highly creative faculty who are the top people in their fields," Renee Meiller, a spokesperson for the College of Engineering, tells the Wisconsin State Journal. "Top faculty think to the future and make research advances that have the power to change or impact their fields in dramatic ways."
DOWN: Loons. A cold spring followed by hot weather has brought waves of black flies to northern Wisconsin, and they're chasing loons away from their nests during the mating season. Michael Meyer of the Department of Natural Resources tells the Associated Press: "The intensity of the black flies is the worst I've seen in the 25 years I've monitored loons."
