July 2022 Isthmus cover
The July cover illustration takes on the scourge of summer in Madison: construction. Emily Balsley, a Madison-based illustrator and muralist, says she was pretty excited to tackle the theme.
“As a Wisconsinite through and through, I am familiar with the old joke: ‘There are two seasons in Wisconsin — winter and road construction.’ There's no avoiding it. And though my main modes of transportation are walking and biking, I'm still dodging construction zones all summer long. Creating this illustration was quite cathartic, actually, putting a fun spin on this common annoyance.”
