A plea deal on drug charges against former UW-Madison student Reed Rogala, 32, explicitly mentions Amos Mortier's alleged murder. The deal says statements by Rogala about his involvement in a marijuana operation cannot be used against him, except with regard to any involvement in Mortier's death. Mortier, 27, disappeared from his Fitchburg home in November 2004. Rogala faces a minimum of 10 years in prison.
Judith Merry, 49, of Windsor, dies from injuries she received when her house exploded earlier in the week. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
Another round of severe storms dumps more rain on water-logged Dane County and spawns tornadoes, which cause little damage. Flooding forces officials to close part of I-94 between Madison and Milwaukee. The state later decides to build a temporary crossover to reopen the highway.
6.13 Friday
Brittany Zimmermann's parents sue 911 dispatcher Rita Gahagan and Dane County, saying missteps by both parties led to their daughter's April 2 murder. Kevin and Jean Zimmermann claim Gahagan received enough information to dispatch police when she took a 911 call dialed from Brittany's cell phone that day. Dane County officials have apologized to Zimmermann's family for not responding to the call.
Richard Weber, a civilian, and Todd Sailor, a Madison firefighter, pull Julie Panka, 42, of McFarland, from her burning car after a semi lands on top of it on the interstate outside of Madison. Panka has non-life-threatening injuries.
6.14 Saturday
Madison-born artist Brendan Scanlon, 24, known as "Solve," is stabbed to death outside a party in Chicago. Kirk Tobolski, of Chicago, is charged with his murder.
A Fitchburg police officer fatally shoots Juan Manuel Avalos-Cisneros, 27. Police say Avalos-Cisneros attacked the officer and would not obey verbal commands to drop a piece of cable he was holding.
6.16 Monday
Michael Fenolio, 29, of McFarland is sentenced to 10 years in prison after striking and killing motorcyclist Michael Jurgens, 50, of Madison in August. It was Fenolio's fifth drunk-driving arrest.
6.17 Tuesday
The Madison Common Council votes to ban the sale of cheap alcohol downtown. Stores will no longer be able to sell less than a six-pack of beer, less than a pint of hard liquor, or fortified wine.
Cross Plains residents recall Supv. Rob Bowman from the Town Board, by a vote of 386-277. Bowman, mired in controversy over development issues, is replaced by Jeff Baylis.
